When I was but a little girl
My auntie said to me
Shall we go to Sunday school?
Will you come along with me?
So off we went together
Hand in hand along the way
Other folk were joining us
To sing and kneel to pray
The church it was in Stamford
Congregational by name
Mr Carnegie was the minister
Much loved by all who came
The church was very simple
But lovely to behold
High wooden pews with doors on
That hid a six year old
I must have been precocious
Because I said to Mr C
Do you know about Jesus
They nailed him to a tree
They were very cruel to him
And hurt his hands and feet
He cried out to his father
And then he fell asleep
A few days later he woke
What joy for those he met
Blessed are we who share that joy
And in his presence rest.
